Green IT Hawaii: Hawaii's Unique Energy Management Needs

Hawaii is almost 90% dependent on imported petroleum to generate electricity for all islands, with the concentration being in Honolulu County with a population of 900,000, as well as large strategic military bases for Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.

In the past few years the Hawaii State Government in conjunction with the Federal Department of Energy, the Public Utilities Commission, HECO (Hawaiian Electric Industries), and a variety of private profit and non-profit businesses and organizations have taken aggressive actions to lead Hawaii into a future energy profile that is 40% renewable by 2030 as well as a 30% reduction in energy use mandated in the same timeframe.  Going green is not only an economic imperative, but also public policy. State by state Hawaii’s energy costs are consistently more than twice the national average. Since these costs are almost 100% tied to oil costs Hawaii is extremely vulnerable to upturns in oil pricing that are by far the most likely scenario in the next 5 to 10 years.

Crisis or opportunity?

Hawaii's extreme dependence on non-renewable foreign oil has contributed to the financial and social crisis we find ourselves in.

However we know that a crisis is always an opportunity. It is human nature not to act until it is too painful not to act.

Feel the pain. Hawaii cannot keep its governmentand public education system running at full capacity, businesses are stretched to the breaking point and beyond, and every time oil prices go up we all brace for more blows to our tourist industry as well as our pocketbooks.

Although we as a nation failed to sustain the initial drive toward energy independence in the 1970's now the forces in the world are aligning to force us to change our ways.

We may call this change 'going green' or 'sustainability' but what it comes down to is taking actions that give us more local control and work in harmony with the powers of nature that are our home.

We believe it is the opportunity of a lifetime for Hawai, and a leadership role in the world for us to fulfill.
